🌾 Kullakar Red Rice కుళ్లకర్ ఎర్ర బియ్యం)

An Ancient Heritage Red Rice for Healthy Living

Kullakar Red Rice is an ancient indigenous rice variety treasured for generations for its rich reddish bran, wholesome nutrition, and authentic traditional taste. Naturally grown using sustainable farming practices, this heritage rice is carefully cultivated by Mrs. Rachakonda Chandana, a Tazawan partnered farmer from Mancherial, Telangana.

Rich in natural bran and single (semi) polished, Kullakar retains more of the grain's natural dietary fiber, minerals, and antioxidants than highly polished white rice. Its earthy flavour and firm texture make it an excellent choice for health-conscious families seeking traditional, minimally processed foods.

🌾 What Makes This Rice Special?

Kullakar is one of India's ancient red rice varieties, traditionally cultivated for generations and valued for its nutritional richness.

Unlike highly polished white rice, Kullakar is single (semi) polished, allowing much of its naturally red bran layer to remain intact. The red bran contains naturally occurring pigments (anthocyanins and related phenolic compounds), which contribute to the rice's antioxidant properties. Scientific studies on traditional red rice varieties have also reported higher levels of dietary fiber, iron, zinc, and other beneficial plant compounds compared with highly polished white rice. However, the exact nutritional values may vary depending on cultivation, soil conditions, and processing.

🌱 Traditional Belief

For generations, traditional farming communities have valued Kullakar Red Rice as a nourishing everyday food.

According to traditional knowledge:

  • Traditionally believed to improve overall strength and stamina.
  • Traditionally valued for supporting healthy digestion due to its natural bran.
  • Traditionally considered a wholesome choice for physically active individuals.
  • Traditionally preferred by many families seeking naturally nutritious foods.

Note: These are traditional beliefs passed down through farming communities and should not be interpreted as medical claims. Kullakar Red Rice should be enjoyed as part of a balanced diet.

🍚 How to Cook

For the best taste and texture, soak the rice for 30–45 minutes before cooking. As Kullakar is single (semi) polished and naturally retains more bran and dietary fiber than polished rice, soaking helps the grains absorb water evenly and cook consistently.

  • Open Pot Cooking: 1 cup rice : 3 cups water
  • Pressure Cooker / Rice Cooker: 1 cup rice : 2 cups water

Every kitchen and cooking vessel is different. We recommend cooking a small quantity the first two or three times and adjusting the water slightly according to your preferred texture.

👩🍳 Tazawan Cooking Tips

1️⃣ Soak Before Cooking
Soak Kullakar Red Rice for 30–45 minutes before cooking to help the grains absorb water evenly.

2️⃣ Cook on a Low Flame
For stovetop cooking, simmer on a low flame after the water reaches a boil. Gentle cooking helps preserve the grain's natural texture and traditional flavour.

3️⃣ Retain the Soaking Water
Whenever possible, cook the rice using the same soaking water. This traditional practice may help retain naturally occurring water-soluble nutrients.

4️⃣ Wash Gently
Avoid washing the rice vigorously or repeatedly. A single gentle rinse is usually sufficient. Excessive washing may remove part of the surface bran where much of the naturally occurring dietary fiber and beneficial plant compounds are present.

5️⃣ Water Ratio

  • Open Pot: 1 cup rice : 3 cups water
  • Pressure Cooker / Rice Cooker: 1 cup rice : 2 cups water

6️⃣ Adjust to Your Preference
Cook a small quantity the first two or three times and adjust the water slightly until you achieve your preferred softness and texture.

🌱 Scientific Perspective

Traditional red rice varieties like Kullakar have attracted scientific interest because their red bran contains naturally occurring antioxidant compounds (including anthocyanins and phenolic compounds). Research has shown that minimally polished red rice generally contains more dietary fiber, antioxidants, iron, zinc, and other beneficial phytochemicals than highly polished white rice. The exact nutritional composition depends on cultivation practices, soil, and the degree of polishing.
